The use of augmentative and alternative communication methods with infants and toddlers with disabilities: a research review

Review of studies between 1982 and 2007 of children aged 0-3 years in order to determine evidence base for AAC use with infants and toddlers with disabilities. All children had significant communication delays and developmental disabilities.

Implications:  AAC methods can be used effectively with 0-3 year age group.  Various types of systems can be successfully used: unaided, non-electronic aided, and electronic technologies.  Evidence of importance of consistent response of caregivers, regardless of method.
