Training for Staff Members

Training Courses for Staff and Professionals

Hands joined together symbolising unity

Training for those using Lámh in their work is divided into two categories:

  1. Module One and Two Lámh Courses for staff members supporting Lámh users and their families

  2. Tutor and Family Trainer training for those who will deliver Modules One, Two and the Lámh Family Course

1. Lámh Training Courses for Staff:

Courses for staff members are run by trained Lamh Tutors working in services.  Tutors are not employed directly by Lámh.  The courses are advertised by the tutors themselves, and sometimes on the Lámh website.

• Lámh in the context of communication
• Training to carry out the Lámh Assessment Process - to examine whether Lámh is the best option for an individual  (Module Two)
• Learning to use signs
• Implementing a full Lámh programme with a child or adult (Module Two)

Optional content areas include:

• Aided & Unaided Systems of Communication
• Encouraging Sign Use
• Common Questions about Signing

Participants on Modules One and Two course receive materials which include  handbooks and books of sign illustrations. A follow-up day for Module Two is held approximately 6 months later. Only those who have completed a full
course can receive certification.

2. Tutor and Trainer Training

The Lámh Board of Directors lead training for staff members and professionals working in healthcare or education, who use Lámh extensively in their work, who have attended the basic course and who wish to deliver Lámh Courses.  The course covers all aspects of planning and implementing staff and family Lámh training packages.  An application form is used to screen potential candidates for the course with direct follow-up to determine suitability if necessary.  Contact the Lámh Development Office to register your interest in the next Tutor Training Course.
