Lámh Tutor Training
One of Lámh’s roles is to train experienced individuals to deliver Lámh training to families and those working with Lámh users. The Lámh Tutor Course provides individuals with the knowledge, support and accreditation to deliver Lámh training to staff and families. New Lámh Tutors are trained by members of the Lámh Board of Directors.
Lámh Tutors
Lámh Tutors work in various disciplines in healthcare or education settings and deliver Lámh training as part of their regular role. Currently:
58% of Lámh Tutors are speech and language therapists
12 % are nurses
7.5% are home teachers and pre-school staff
10% work in adult services as tutors/ instructors/ supervisors
6% are teachers
6.5% have other roles such as child development officer, psychologist, etc.
To become a Lámh Tutor, applicants must:
1. Complete the five-day Lámh Course (or Modules One and Two)
2. Contact the Lámh Development Office and add your name to the contact list. This is not a guarentee of a place on the course - details and application forms will be circulated when the next Tutor Training course is organised.
3. Use Lámh regularly in your work and have extensive experience of supporting Lámh users and their families.
4. Fulfil criteria set down in the application form.
It is very important that those applying to do Lámh Tutor Training are in a position to deliver Lámh courses when they have completed training.
How often are Lámh Tutor Training Courses held?
When there are sufficient numbers of suitably qualified and experienced applicants. The last three courses that took place were:
In 2005, held in Tullamore, Co. Offaly with 16 participants
In 2006, held in Portlaoise, Co. Laois with 24 participants
In 2008, held in All Hallows, Dublin with 25 participants
Can I run Lámh courses if I have trained as a tutor for another augmentative/alternative manual sign system?
Lámh sincerely values the experience of those applying to do Tutor Training. However, in order to ensure that training is standardised, all those delivering Lámh courses must have undertaken Lámh Tutor Training and received accreditation.
How long does Tutor training take and how do I apply?
Four days of training, usually broken up into two sessions over a month. Following this, new tutors are required to deliver a course within a specified time in order to obtain Level Two full accreditation. Contact the Lámh Development Office in order to register your interest and to be notified when the next Tutor Course is happening.
